Unit 1 The world is your oyster

The world is your oyster means that you are in a position to take the opportunities that life has to offer. You can do whatever you want and go wherever you want. However things are not that simple because of the borders and walls between nations. Whether physical or symbolic, real or fictitious, geographic or political, walls mark a separation between peoples or groups which, at best, are not understood. These walls protect, but also divide, lands and men. These walls can represent obstacles to reach one’s dreams and hopes. This is particularly the case with the border between the United States and Mexico. In this unit we may wonder: What are the different viewpoints? Are borders always visible? In globalized society, what role do borders play?

Notion: Identities and exchanges

Final task: You’ve just crossed the border to get a better life. Write your journey in your diary.
