SIMPLE PAST (PRETERIT)
Irregular verbs : learn the list by heart.
Regular verbs :
- Affirmative = Verb+-ed
I played, you played, he played etc.
/!\ Verbs ending with -y = I carry, I carried
!\ Verbs ending with a consonant following one vowel : doubling of the consonant = I stop, I stopped
- Negative = did not + verb
I didn’t play, you didn’t play, he didnt’ play etc.
- Interrogative = Did + subject+ verb
Did I play? Did you play? Did he play? Etc.
- We use simple past to talk about finished events in the past. (temps du récit)
Ex: They lived in New York then moved to French Guiana. They came here in 2010.
- We can also use it to talk about past habits.
Ex: I visited them every day for a year.
